Catechism

Q. 44. What shall be done to the wicked at the day of judgement?

A. At the day of judgement, the bodies of the wicked, being raised out of their graves, shall be sentenced, together with their souls, to unspeakable torments with the devil and his angels forever.

And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Daniel 12:2

Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice  and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. John 5:28-29

They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might 2 Thessalonians 1:9

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. Matthew 25:41

  1. It’s too bad that this terrifying doctrine is so neglected in today’s churches. One of the professors at RTS Orlando used to shock the students when teaching this doctrine by saying, “One day some of you may rejoice to see your unbelieving mother thrown alive into the lake of fire to be tormented forever.”

At first such a statement seems outrageous, but when we consider that the lake of fire was created to demonstrate the awesome glory of God’s holiness and justice, it’s completely plausible – from HIS point of view, that such a display of God’s justice and hatred of sin will be cause for great rejoicing among the elect – who are to the praise of His awesome mercy and love towards His enemies who deserve only His justice.
